The concert is sadly cancelled due to industrial action.
The best artists think differently.
Watch the concert live on this page. The transmission starts at 19.25 on Friday 3 September.
Our opening concert includes big statements from composers who prove that. In John Adams’s 1918 masterpiece Harmonium, Adams explored a new way of writing – slowing the rate of harmonic change so that every change in key resembled a ‘celestial gear-shift.’ The result is an epic piece, setting poems by John Donne and Emily Dickinson, that appears to soar over vast stretches of imaginary terrain.
In her orchestral work Bioluminescence, Kristine Tjøgersen transfers the rhythmic behavior of light-emitting firefly species into music. Her orchestra recreates the patterns and figurations of these tiny creatures and the bioluminescent signals they emit. Meanwhile, LED lights do the same – creating an ever-changing tapestry of timbres for ears and eyes.
Carl Nielsen’s Violin Concert would have felt no less imaginative when it was first performed in 2011. Prizewinning violinist Johan Dalene joins the orchestra and Edward Gardner for a concerto that unites the rural and the urban in a thrilling dance.
